Hmmmmm.....I feel like I need a change or something. I have this huge impulse to purge my icons and replace them all with icons from Bleach, Hikaru no Go, Initial D, Naruto, Prince of Tennis, or Yakitate!Japan or something. *shifty eyes* But I love all my current ones too. even if I don't use them all. They're there when I need to use them at an appropriate time.

I must be feeling restless again. I'm so eclectic and mercurial that I always want to change something or take up a new hobby. My latest is BPAL and that is a very expensive hobby. Well...more expensive than my other hobbies. Or not. *looks at scrapbooking/sticker supplies, jewelry, cds, anime dvds/dvds, shoes, and purse collections* Erm. Yeah. But at least I smell good, ne? *shifty eyes*

In other news, I'm nearly rid of the flu/nasty head cold I was given as a belated Christmas present from my coworker. Which is YAY! But am still working crazy hours. Also, World of Warcraft has officially sucked me back into playing. (Level 23 with only a week of semi-serious playing!!! heeeee! I've been averaging a level each time I play if I play for 3 hours. Of course it helps when I've got my kuya running my character through all my quests...esp. the orange and red ones! Nearly done with Wetlands!!! yay! But must do Gnomeregan. I want that staff!!!!!!) Yes, so I am slacking on RPG's in favor of WoW. Ooops. >.>

As work is slowly wrapping down to more normal hours, I am being a bit more active on LJ and need to stop lurking about and start stalking you all commenting again.

OH! I need some recs. C'mon flist. I need a book to read. So please recommend any book that is not a Horror/mystery (I get nightmares from those!) that is a good read. Thanks!

Here are my recommendations: The Art of Kissing by William Cane (a fun book on different types of kissing as well as the sociological impacts. He also has another one on handshakes. Pretty interesting.) and The Art of Doing Nothing by Veronique Vienne (I love her books...there's also The Art of Imperfection, The Art of the Moment, and The Art of Growing Up. She has beautiful sepia coloured photos and some great tips! And yes, I have them all!)

p.s. My Street X-Class at the gym ROCKS. I'm learning some new hip hop moves. Now if only the teacher taught how us how to pop. I need to work on that like you wouldn't believe. *is a bad dancer*

Don't know (obviously) what you've read...

but I do adore Heinlein, and can rec some specifics.

Pratchett obviously.

At Swim Two Boys is the best book I've read for many years, the first chapter is hard to get by, but after that it settles down and will liv in your heart for ever.

I mainly stick to fantasy and sci fi with random trips into sociology, trashy romance (perfect for those nights when you need something mindless), interesting historical documentaries, fairy tales from around the world, poetry, astrophysics/physics/geology/science, philosophy, and all things anime.

Terry Pratchett, I've read some of his work. I will check out At Swim Two Boys later today when I head off to pick up a copy of Good Omens. Which works by Heinlein do you recommend? *interested*

lol well never mind if you're already getting Good Omens. *pats your lil head*

If you like that one, check out Lamb by Christopher Moore. It's the missing years of Jesus's life, as told by Christ's childhood pal, Biff. Moore is hilariously funny, and really quirky without being mean about it. That one's definitely on my list of favorites.

eep. Heinlein. So many..

I started with "Time Enough for Love" and I highly recommend starting there. H is skilful enough that, although he's written about his protagonist before in many shorter novels, you don't miss anything, and you learn everything you need to know, and you can then go and read the shorter "future history" series and treat them as a backstory to "Time Enough for Love"

*squeees* Thank you for the rec!!! I'll definately look for the book later today!

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is pure comedic genius, and a really fascinating read. Or, have you read Bridget Jones's Diary? I just read it and it's really hilarious and sweet. Highly recommended. :D

I don't think I've read Bridget Jones' Diary but I know the movie is hilarious. But I'll be checking it out at the library soon!

clive barker's imajica was fantastic. and if you dion't mind reading something looooooong, pick up tad williams' otherland. it's four books of ~700 pages each, but is fantastic.

if you like pratchett, try piers anthony's incarnations series. guy kills death while trying to commit suicide and ends up becoming death. (without the kitten fetish)

Ooooh. I haven't read any of Clive Barker. I will go check that out at the library. Tad Williams' stuff is very long. But I haven't read any since I was reading other things. *shifty eyes*

OMG. I ADORE PIERS ANTHONY'S Incarnations of Immortality series!!! I have them all!!! I've read most of his stuff since I first started out with his Xanth series. My favorite of them all is that one you mentioned and the last book. So freakin' good. *snuggles* Heee! I even recced it to [livejournal.com profile] underlucius.

Eeee! You said mercurial! *heaps billions of Cool Points upon Jemzy*

And god, book recs?

My current absolute obsession is Anne Bishop's Blood Jewels Trilogy: Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness. There's another book in the same 'verse, so to speak, The Invisible Ring and an anthology of short stories/novellas that fill in some of the gaps of the original trilogy called Dreams Made Flesh. They're bloody amazing. My favorite thing about this world is the social aspect, I suppose: women are in charge, worshipped in a way, and it's fascinating how Bishop portrays it. Her World of the Fae trilogy has started out good as well, but I'm only on the first one. Site: http://www.annebishop.com/books.htm

At this exact moment I'm working on Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy trilogy (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/104-2027543-8997514?url=index%3Dstripbooks%3Arelevance-above&field-keywords=kushiel%27s+legacy&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go), which are quite good. Sex and political intrigue in AU medieval France. Wee!

Then of course, there's George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/4/ref=pd_sr_ec_ser_b/104-2027543-8997514), which are breathtakingly beautiful and detailed and intricate and LONG but oh so good.

For plain old smut (the latest ones are like 800 page long PWPs, almost, which pisses some readers off but I enjoy), I read anything by Laurell K Hamilton--she's got two series, Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/118/ref=pd_sr_ec_ser_b/104-2027543-8997514) and Meredith Gentry (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/91090/ref=pd_ser_sim_s/104-2027543-8997514). The Anita books don't get smutty until, oh, book 7 or so; Meredith's start out smutty and get smuttier.

Last but not least, my favorite witchcraft books, Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking, Every Which Way But Dead and The Good, The Bad, and the Undead (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/104-2027543-8997514?url=index%3Dstripbooks%3Arelevance-above&field-keywords=dead+witch+walking&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go). Very funny, probably a lot more lighthearted than the books above, and a very intelligent and clever view of a not-too-futuristic world in which witches, warlocks, vampires, etc, aren't in hiding anymore.

OK. This one's last, I promise, I jut couldn't remember the author's name: Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld (http://kelleyarmstrong.com/mSeries.htm) books. Also hilarious, but more serious at the same time. I like her stuff because she focuses on a different character every cycle, you could say. They're all in the same universe, and not quite different series, but various viewpoints of the same timeline. The easiest way is to read them in the published order; they can stand alone, but they do reference to the other books, so it's easier to make sense if your read them in order. She's got a bunch of novellas and short stories up on her website, too, which makes her love because it's all free. :D

I know that's a lot of books, but those are my favorite fantasy novels. If you don't read fantasy...sorry for the spam. :P

I'm guessing you've already read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan...?

For a serious reading, I'd suggest The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. In short, it's about the political climate in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban came to power.

Erm. Robert Jordan's books scare me. :-P They're so long and remind me of L.E. Modesitt's books.

The second book sounds very intriguing. I will definately look for it at the library. Thanks, m'dear!!!

I just finished "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" by Mark Haddon for my Brit lit class, and it was great. It's about a 15-year-old autistic boy in England who finds his neighbor's dog dead with a garden fork in its side in the yard, and decides to figure out who killed it. Really great story, SUCH an interesting POV.
