thoughts on an international disaster
Jan. 7th, 2005 10:10 amThe last line of an article I finished reading hits me and makes me tear up. It made me wonder about what is needed to help restore a devastated area. It made me wish I was a magician and with a flick of my wrist, the devastation would disappear. The mental anguish that so many suffer through the aftermath of the tsunami is affecting tens of thousands of people, esp. in a country that has the highest suicide rate in the world.
What can be done to save them? The outpouring of love and help is overflowing from all over the world, united in grief, horror, and compassion. Yet, there's still mini disasters waiting to happen. There are language barriers, fear of water-born diseases, not enough clean water to drink, not enough medicine that are going to the right places....and most importantly, not enough of an organized movement on the most basic level.
I wonder what else we can do to help.
